Sylvie "Sima" Wexler

May 17, 1927 - July 16, 2011

Sylvie “Sima” Wexler, 84, of Janesville passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center surrounded by her loving family. Sima was born in Beloit on May 17, 1927, the daughter of Harry and Clara (Furman) Filvaroff. She graduated from Janesville High School in 1945 and attended U-W Madison. Sima married Robert J. Wexler on June 26, 1947. They owned and operated J.J.Smith Jewelry in Janesville for many years until retiring in June of 1991. Sima was active in may civic organizations. Over the years, she served on the following boards:

Rock County Hospital and Rock Haven, the Janesville City Council, the Janesville Public Library , the Arrowhead Library, South Central Wisconsin American Red Cross Chapter, Janesville League of Women Voters, Janesville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors , Cedar Crest board, the ECHO board, the YWCA board and was a member of the Badger Council of Girls Scouts Board. She received the YWCA Woman of Distinction award and in 2005 the Alexis de Tocqueville award for volunteerism. Sima was a member of Congregation B’Nai Abraham of Beloit.

Surviving are three children, Susan (Alan) Crater of Chatham, NJ, Marvin (June) Wexler of Fremont, CA, Deborah (David) Markgraff of Damascus, OR, five grandchildren, Geoffrey and Allison Crater, Tyler and Alexander “Abi” Markgraff, Mitchell Wexler, one brother, David Filvaroff of Buffalo, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on August 24, 2002.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, July 18, 2011 at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home, 1010 N. Wright Rd., Janesville. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday at Henke-Clarson Funeral Home.Memorial donations may be made to ECHO, The American Red Cross or Cedar Crest. www.henkeclarson.com.
